roughly 3.7 million aged 15 years and older reported they used opioid pain relievers in the previous 12 months.

As of recent estimates, over 200,000 Canadians are living with the clinical criteria for established opioid use disorder. The opioid crisis in Canada has been a significant public health issue, with a notable rise in opioid-related overdoses and deaths over the past decade. This situation is driven by the widespread availability of prescription opioids, as well as the increased presence of potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The crisis has affected communities across the country, with particularly severe impacts in provinces such as British Columbia and Ontario.

Fentanyl addiction has severe and often deadly consequences. Due to its extreme potency—50 to 100 times stronger than morphine—even a small overdose can lead to respiratory failure and death. The addiction can lead to a rapid decline in physical and mental health, increasing the risk of overdose, especially since fentanyl is often mixed with other substances unknowingly. Social consequences include strained relationships, job loss, and homelessness. The widespread availability of illicit fentanyl has also exacerbated the opioid crisis, contributing to a significant increase in overdose deaths across many communities.

over 21% of Canadians might meet the criteria for addiction in their lifetime
Among the people who used opioid pain relievers, 9.7% (roughly 351,000) engaged in problematic use.
Canada continues to experience an opioid public health emergency wherein opioid-related poisonings and deaths continue to rise.
Canada’s opioid crisis disproportionally impacts some regions of the country and specific populations, such as people with low income or males working in certain industries (e.g., construction).
Treatment of opioid addiction without treating the underlying or associated mental health conditions is less successful. This issue is often overlooked in opioid treatment programs.
Problematic use of opioids is more likely for people reporting fair or poor mental health compared with those with better perceived mental health.
Likewise those with poor mental health report a higher incidence of problematic use of opioids.
